Lifting one’s eyes up towards the beautiful and lofty heavens is a hopeful gesture, while conversely allowing the eyes to fall downward brings thoughts of darkness and despair. But C.G. Jung stated “No tree can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down into hell”. Investigating this concept directs the eye into the darkest corners of the inner landscape and illuminates the most dense shadows. This “willing search where one least wants to look”, liberates the soul to rise incrementally towards the light.
